HACKERTUBE TV

The YouTube videos Hacker News keeps telling each other to watch, on the TV, with just the remote.

The Problem

HackerTube collects the YouTube videos people on Hacker News keep recommending to each other. It is a website, built for a mouse and keyboard. Long talks and explainers are best watched on a TV, where all you have is a remote.

The Solution

An unofficial TV app that runs the real site full screen and makes every part of it work with the D-pad. Videos and topics come live from the site, so new ones show up without an app update. The whole app is a single 80 KB APK with no dependencies.

How It Works

TV Home

Topics along the top, rows that scroll sideways, and a big preview of the video you're on with what Hacker News said about it.

Remote First

The D-pad reaches everything, and Back behaves like a TV app: out of the player, then the page, back to the card you opened.

Full-Screen Player

Select pauses, Left and Right seek. Up or Down opens controls for subtitles, playback speed, Like and Watch later.

Your Data Stays

Likes, history and Watch later are kept on the TV between launches, like on the website.

Runs on Fire OS, Android TV and Google TV (Android 5.1 or later). It isn't in an app store, so you sideload it, which takes about five minutes with just the remote.
